Lewis Hower, Executive Director, James Lee Sorenson Global Impact Investing Center, at the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah.
Mr. Hower is the Executive Director of the Sorenson Global Impact Investing (SGII) Center at the University of Utah. The SGII Center is an industry-leading program that facilitates the growth of the impact investing space while educating the next generation of social and environmental leaders. The Center provides bespoke impact investing services through a cost efficient delivery model while providing top university students with real-world experience and interaction. The SGII's student associates collaborate with leading social venture funds, banks, foundations, consulting firms and social entrepreneurs to identify, fund, and grow businesses that have significant social and/or, environmental impact.
The SGII Center was created through the genesis of the University Impact Fund (UIF) where Mr. Hower served as the Managing Director from its creation in 2010 to absorption by The SGII Center in 2013. UIF is an affiliate of the University Venture Fund (UVF), which is an $18M independent venture fund that is the oldest and largest student-run venture firm in the country. UIF’s cross campus program lead the way for global impact investing experiential education opportunities for students at all levels and degrees of study.
Prior to the creation of UIF, Mr. Hower served as the Marketing Manager for the Sorenson Housing Opportunity Fund, an affiliate of Huntsman Gay Capital Impact, where he focused on fundraising and finance operations for the project which invests in the creation of affordable housing and finance products for the working poor of India.
Previously, Mr. Hower managed finance and operations for Unitus Investment Group where he worked in the development of innovative for-profit approaches to solving some of the worlds most profound social challenges. Unitus Investment Group was the for-profit affiliate of the global microfinance accelerator Unitus, Inc. (now Unitus Labs). While at Unitus Investment Group, Lewis worked with the founding team of Unitus Capital during their early stages while spinning out from Unitus, Inc. Today Unitus Capital is the worlds first private and independent financial advisory and investment banking firm specializing in arranging capital for microfinance institutions and other social enterprises benefiting those at the bottom of the economic pyramid. Unitus Capital has successfully arranged over $700 million in debt and equity financing for social enterprises to date.
Mr. Hower currently serves on the Board of Directors at the Community Foundation of Utah where he is the co-director of the committee for entrepreneurship and is focused on innovating new models of social and business development for community engagement.
Lewis holds a B.S.E. in Bioengineering from Arizona State University where he spent time working in startup biotechnology research and small business operations.
